TOP Frequently Asked Questions

What makes Shymon different from other appliance repair companies in Toronto?

We go beyond the fix. Every visit includes punctual arrival windows, call/text updates, protective shoe covers and floor mats, and full respect for your space. You’ll get a clear diagnosis, an upfront quote before work begins, and warranty-backed repairs performed by licensed and insured technicians. Where possible, we offer same-day service and carry common parts to resolve issues in one visit.

Which appliances do you repair?

We repair major household appliances from leading brands: refrigerators and freezers; ranges, ovens and cooktops; dishwashers; washing machines; and dryers (gas and electric). If your unit isn’t listed, contact us—if we can’t help, we’ll advise the best next step.

How quickly can you fix my washer or dryer?

Across Toronto and the GTA we aim for same-day or next-day appointments. Repair time depends on the issue and part availability, but many washer and dryer repairs are completed in a single visit when parts are in stock.

Why is professional dryer vent cleaning important?

Lint buildup restricts airflow, forces the dryer to run hotter and longer, and significantly increases fire risk. Annual professional cleaning (or every 6 months for heavy use, large households, or pets) improves safety, speeds drying, and can reduce energy consumption.

What benefits come with Shymon’s repair services?
  • Licensed, experienced technicians
  • Warranty on parts and labour
  • Transparent, upfront pricing
  • Fast, reliable service across Toronto and the GTA
  • Respectful, uniformed professionals
  • Flexible scheduling, including weekends
  • Occasional special offers and discounts
Are dryer sheets bad for my dryer?

Dryer sheets won’t damage the dryer, but residue can clog the lint screen and coat the moisture sensor. If you use them, clean the lint screen regularly and wipe the sensor with a soft cloth. Consider wool dryer balls as a low-residue alternative.

How long should a load of laundry take to dry?

A typical large load should dry in about 45 minutes. If loads consistently take over an hour, check the lint screen, outside vent hood and ducting for restrictions, or book a vent inspection.

Why does my oven smell during self-clean?

Self-clean burns off baked-on grease and food residue, which can create strong odours and smoke. Ventilate the kitchen, remove heavy debris beforehand, and consider removing racks if your manual advises. Avoid self-clean if birds are in the home, as fumes can be irritating.

Why does my gas oven glow even when it isn’t heating?

That orange glow is the hot-surface (glow-bar) igniter heating up. If it doesn’t reach the correct temperature, the safety valve won’t open and the burner won’t light. A weak igniter often needs replacement.

Why do I have leftover suds in my washer?

Most often it’s too much detergent or using non-HE soap in an HE washer. Use HE detergent and measure for load size and water softness. Run a Rinse & Spin and perform a monthly Clean Washer cycle.

Why is my washer’s warm cycle cooler in winter?

Warm is a blend of hot and cold. In winter the cold supply is colder, so warm runs cooler. Some models also adjust temps for efficiency. Ensure the hot valve is open and hoses aren’t kinked.

Can I place my refrigerator flush against the wall?

Leave clearance for airflow: generally 1–2 inches (2.5–5 cm) behind and 0.5–1 inch (1–2 cm) at the sides. If there’s a visible rear coil grid, keep at least 1 inch (2.5 cm). Always follow your model’s manual.

How do I dispose of an old refrigerator or freezer?

Refrigerant must be safely recovered by a certified technician before disposal. Options include city bulky-item pickup/recycling, retailer haul-away, or drop-off at an approved facility. We can evacuate refrigerant and arrange removal.

Can I store a refrigerator or freezer in the garage?

Self-defrosting units may struggle below about 50°F (10°C). Low ambient temps can thicken compressor oil and confuse defrost controls. Use a garage-ready model or keep the space above 50°F (10°C).

Should I repair or replace my existing appliance?

Avoid comparing a replacement at the same price you paid 10 years ago—entry-level models today often use lower-cost components and may not match past durability. Either invest in a higher-quality new unit for longer service life, or repair a solid mid/high-tier appliance you already own.

Is repairing or servicing an older appliance a good investment?

Often, yes. Consider the quality of the replacement you can afford versus a professional repair. We’ll diagnose and advise repair vs. replace. Also factor in the hassle costs of shopping, delivery, installation and disposal.

Why do prices of similar-looking appliances vary so much?

Component quality, insulation, features and brand tiers differ. While entry-level sticker prices can look flat over time, top-tier machines cost more because higher-grade parts cost more. As a ballpark, premium units often start around: dishwashers ~$900, washers ~$1,100, dryers ~$600.

What’s the most common appliance problem you see?

Power issues—tripped breakers, switched-off or GFCI outlets, or unplugged cords. Check power first, then call us if it still won’t start.

What does Shymon Appliance Repair do?

We diagnose, repair, and maintain major household appliances—any brand—across Toronto and the GTA, with upfront pricing and warranty-backed workmanship.

Do you offer same-day or emergency service?

Yes. Same-day or next-day appointments are available in much of Toronto and the GTA. After-hours emergency support may be available—call for current availability.

Do you service evenings or weekends?

Yes. We offer flexible scheduling, including select evenings and weekends. Time windows are confirmed by call or text.

What areas do you cover?

We serve Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). If you are outside our core zone, contact us and we’ll confirm availability or recommend a trusted partner.

How do you price diagnostics and repairs?

We provide an upfront diagnostic fee and a flat-rate repair quote before work begins. If you proceed with the repair, the diagnostic fee is applied toward the total.

What payment methods do you accept?

We accept major credit/debit cards and e-transfer; cash is also accepted on request. Invoices and receipts are provided digitally.

What warranty do you offer on parts and labour?

Repairs include a written warranty on parts and labour. Coverage length varies by part and manufacturer; we’ll note terms on your invoice.

Do you use OEM parts or aftermarket?

We prioritize OEM parts for fit and reliability. When OEM is unavailable or uneconomical, we may recommend high-quality aftermarket components and explain pros and cons.

Do you work with property managers, landlords or short-term rentals?

Yes. We coordinate access, provide time-stamped visit notes, and can bill to the account on file. Multi-unit and repeat service programs are available.

Do you offer maintenance plans?

Yes. Seasonal or annual maintenance (e.g., dryer vent cleaning, refrigerator coil cleaning, dishwasher filter service) helps reduce breakdowns and energy use.

What should I do if I smell gas from my range or dryer?

Turn off the appliance, avoid flames or switches, open windows, and shut off the gas supply if safe. Leave the area and contact your gas provider or emergency services, then book a licensed repair.

What should I do if an appliance is leaking water?

Shut off water to the unit if possible and unplug it. Clean up standing water to prevent damage, then schedule a diagnosis to check hoses, valves, pumps, or door seals.

Is it safe to run appliances on an extension cord?

No. Most appliances require a dedicated, properly grounded outlet. Extension cords can overheat and pose a fire risk.

Do you install new appliances and provide hookups?

Yes. We offer professional installation, including water, drain, and gas hookups where permitted. We can also remove and dispose of the old unit.

My dryer tumbles but doesn’t heat. What’s wrong?

Possible causes include a tripped thermal fuse, failed heating element, restricted vent, or gas ignition issue. We’ll test components and airflow to pinpoint the fault.

My washer smells musty. How do I fix it?

Run a Clean Washer cycle with a cleaner, wipe the door gasket, clean the drain filter, and leave the door ajar between loads. Use HE detergent and avoid over-dosing.

My washer won’t drain or spin. What should I check?

Check for kinks or clogs in the drain hose, clean the pump filter, and ensure the load is balanced. If it persists, the pump, lid/door switch, or control may need service.

My fridge is warm but the freezer is cold. Why?

Airflow issues are common: iced-over evaporator, failed fan, blocked vents, or a defrost problem. We’ll test the fan, sensors and defrost system.

Why is my ice maker not making ice?

Check the water supply, filter, and ice maker arm. A faulty inlet valve, ice maker module, or freezer temperature can also be to blame.

Why does my oven take too long to preheat?

Causes include a weak bake element/igniter, door gasket leaks, or improper rack placement. We’ll test elements/igniter current draw and inspect the seal.

Can a cracked glass cooktop be repaired?

No. Cracked ceramic-glass tops are a safety hazard and should be replaced. Avoid using the cooktop until the glass is replaced.

Why are my dishwasher dishes still wet?

Use rinse aid, select a heated or extended dry option, and load to allow airflow. If it persists, the heater, vent fan, or sensor may need service.
